2XL ATV Offroad

For iPhone and iPod Touch

The ubiquitousness of the iPhone means games developers ignore it at their peril. But while currently you can either enjoy the low res simple addictiveness of Flight Control or Lemonade Tycoon or the 'not as good as the full size game' rebrands of The Sims, Civ Rev and the like, it's very rare to find a iPhone game which fulfils its potential as a game in its own right. ATV Offroad is that game.

With all the characteristics of a typical racer, but actually with graphics so beautifully rendered you'd be chuffed to see them on a PSP or DS, ATV Offroad gives you three different track types to work through.

Whichever track you plump for you can navigate your way round it using a user-friendly and surprisingly instinctive controls. There are buttons round the edge of the screen for you to press to accelerate, brake or do tricks, but the preload button is the most useful one to get to grips with - giving you the chance to prepare a trick for when you hit a ramp or hill to maximise your momentum.

Once you've mastered the sixteen tracks on offer with different vehicles and racers, you can then go to multiplayer mode where up to five friends can play together - which might make up for any losses you take playing the computer racers, who are difficult enough to make the game a challenge.

If you're a fan of racing games you won't find better at the App Store currently.
