Lyon & Turnbull, 182 Bath Street, Glasgow, G2 4HG This exhibition celebrates 150 years since the birth of John Duncan Fergusson (1874-1961), the longest-lived and most international of the pioneering group of artists known as the Scottish Colourists. To mark the occasion, fine art auctioneers Lyon & Turnbull have curated a special touring exhibition of more than 20 of Fergusson’s paintings and sculptures.
They are all respected painters with decades worth of experience, big individual fan bases and countless awards to their names, but until a few years ago, Rosemary Beaton, Alice McMurrough, Heather Nevay and Helen Wilson, all said they felt intimidated by printmaking. Now, thanks to the encouragement of master printmaker June Carey, they have embraced the ancient techniques of printmaking.
Artist Martin Boyce reworks and references the textures and forms of the built environment to create sculptures that that often form poetic landscapes that merge interior and exterior spaces.
A deep connection to the land and sea links together the artists on display in this exhibition, at Fidra Fine Art Gallery. Kirstie Behrens focuses on detailed etchings of Highland landscapes as well as the woodland around her home in Fife. Andy Heald and John McClenaghen both paint outdoors when they can, especially around the coast of East Lothian. Andy Warhol’s rediscovered textiles are on display in Scotland for the first time ever. The iconic artist created and sold his textiles anonymously, leaving them in obscurity until their recent discovery by collectors and curators Richard Chamberlain and Geoff Rayner.
