LOCAL councillor Tony Gurney this week started a “reverse advent” in aid of North Ayrshire Foodbanks and is urging everyone to follow his lead and donate to a local charity.

A reverse advent is one where, instead of receiving a treat every day, you give a gift for each day of advent. The gifts can then be donated for Christmas and in his case, the gifts are all foodstuffs destined for the North Ayrshire Foodbank.

Councillor Gurney told the Herald: “A reverse advent is an excellent way of supporting the local community. North Ayrshire Foodbanks do an excellent job working with the disadvantaged members of our society and deserve any support we can offer.

“At this time of year, perhaps more than any other, our thoughts turn to those less fortunate than ourselves. By participating in this initiative we can support North Ayrshire Foodbanks in ensuring that families and children in our communities are fed this Christmas.

“I would urge anyone who feels able to start their own reverse advent. If you wish to take part simply collect one item of food for each day of advent and, come Christmas Eve (or earlier if your can), take your gifts to the foodbank. They will ensure your gifts reach those most in need. Please ensure that your gifts are non-perishable.

“If each family who can, gives, then every family in need can be supported.”

If you wish to join Councillor Gurney your reverse advent collections can be taken to the North Ayrshire Foodbank, Ardrossan Church of the Nazarene, 150 Glasgow St, Ardrossan, KA22 8EU.
