A LEARNER driver crashed an uninsured car while there was a child in the backseat because he wanted to go to the shop.

Liam Norris, was seen driving on Hawthorn Street in Possilpark, on April 18, 2017 by two other motorists.

The 20-year-old was seen turning into a Farmfoods car park where he crashed into the passenger side door of another car being driven by a female.

The collision caused extensive damage to both cars.

Following the incident, Norris of Haywood Street in Milton got out of the drivers door and was seen to remove a child, thought to be around nine-years-old, from the backseat.

The child was heard crying loudly before being told by Norris that he was going to take her to her “grannies”.

He then ran away towards Ashfield Street with the child in tow leaving the witnesses in shock.

Both concerned for the child’s welfare, they called the police to report the incident.

Officers attended the scene and carried out checks on the vehicle to find out who it belonged to.

The registered owner of the vehicle turned out to be the mother of the child after police attended the address.

Norris later turned himself into police station and made a full admission to the incident.

The child was found to be safe and well and did not have any injuries as a result of the crash.

Norris appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to driving in the path on an oncoming vehicle, driving without insurance and as a provisional license holder not accompanied by a qualified driver or with L plates.

He was also charged with leaving the scene of a crash without stopping to give his name and address.

The court heard how Norris had wanted to go to the shops so got behind the wheel.

Although he has been taking driving lessons, he has yet to sit his test.

Sheriff Mary McCrory imposed four penalty points and a six-month driving ban on the accused.

He was also ordered to pay a £650 fine.
