A couple celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary raised over £800 for the Ayrshire Hospice by asking friends and family to donate to the charity instead of buying them presents.
Ann and Noel Hughes from Stevenston held a party at St John’s Hall on September 23 for their 50th wedding anniversary.
Noel, who is 75, had been receiving treatment for cancer and as a thank you to the support from the Ayrshire Hospice, the couple decided to use their milestone to raise funds for the charity.
Ann, 72, said: “My husband had been looked after and we wanted to put something back. When we sent out our invitations we said no gifts, give a donation to the Ayrshire Hospice because they’ve been helpful to us. It was just a lovely afternoon. We thoroughly enjoyed it. We had a surprise visit from Noel’s sister and niece from Dublin and no one knew they were coming. That was a lovely surprise. It was a great day.”
“Nine out of our 10 grandsons were there last Saturday [at the party]. One couldn’t make it because he’s in Australia but nine out of 10’s good!”
