An Ardrossan resident is fed up with waste being dumped around the marina.

Hugh Cuthill says he finds it frustrating when he removes dumped items such as bikes from the sea, only for them to end up back in the water again.

He said: “It’s just irritating when something like this happens.

“The factor is Glasgow-based Hacking and Paterson. If you draw their attention to this, they’ll put out a nice letter telling people don’t do this.

“You think there’s all this Blue Planet, this wouldn’t happen anymore. It’s irritating more than anything.

“There was this wee bike in the water. Who would come up here and fling a bike in the water? I waited till the tide went out and I put it beside the bin. Within a wee while it was back in the water again.

“At the top end of the pier we get lads coming round fishing. There should be a huge waste bin but there’s not, so you get beer cans and bottles coming in with the tide. It’s annoying.

“My first course of action is I’ll call the factor and they report it to the council as flytipping. Stuff does lie about for weeks [but] things do eventually go.”

David Doran, director of Hacking and Paterson Management Services, said: “Whilst we would not normally comment on matters private to the homeowners of Mariners View, Ardrossan, working closely with the homeowners committee and with the AGM having been held in recent months, this topic was not identified as an issue of concern.

“In saying this, the homeowners have recently appointed new cleaning contractors for the development, Cunninghame Furniture Recycling Company, a Scottish charity and social enterprise which aims to help low income families to furnish their homes by re-using unwanted furniture and white goods.

“We understand that, in addition to their regular duties, they will be able offer, the homeowners, at cost, removal of any items disposed of in and around the development.”

A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson added: “We are unaware of any reports regarding flytipping in this area. If the waste has been left on private land, it would be the responsibility of the landowner or factor to clear.

“The marina is also private land and it would be the responsibility of the operators.”
