POLICE are reminding vehicle owners to be vigilant after a spate of fuel thefts.

Fuel can be stolen from vehicles and storage tanks by the use of siphoning equipment that can vary from the basic tube to more sophisticated arrangements involving pumps and the cutting of fuel lines.

A spokesperson for policing in North Ayrshire said: “Local officers have been making contact with a number of businesses in the area encouraging them to regularly review their security on their premises.

“Enquiries are ongoing into recent incidents and we are increasing patrols in particular areas in an effort to identify those responsible. Today we are also issuing some advice on steps that can be taken to reduce opportunities for thieves.

“We would therefore appeal to anyone who sees something suspicious or those with information on those involved in crime to contact us by calling 101 or to call the independent charity CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 11.”
