RESIDENTS of Stevenston were left angry after it was claimed bin men refused to pick up litter dropped whilst emptying waste.

At the recent meeting of Stevenston Community Council, it was mooted that refuse collectors said it was not their duty to pick up stray rubbish that had been blown out of the bin lorry or spilt on collection and that Streetscene staff would have to collect it.

A council spokesperson said: “We have not been made aware of this incident.

“However, generally speaking our collection crews are expected to pick up any items spilled onto the street when emptying bins into the lorry. The only exception would be when there is excessive spillages. These incidents are instead reported to our Streetscene team for their assistance, allowing our collection crews to continue with their routes.”
