TWO Saltcoats students are hoping to raise almost £6,000 so they can volunteer on a humanitarian programme abroad.

James Simmons and Sarah Park, who are both 18 and studying at Glasgow Caledonian University, are hoping to participate in the VESA programme in Fiji.

The VESA program allows volunteers to be part of large scale humanitarian projects in regions of the world where traditional charity and aid has not addressed the social and environmental risks the communities face.

James said: “We’re hoping to get as close to £6,000 as possible.

“We both agreed it sounded fantastic, a once in a lifetime opportunity and we’d get to see Fiji. “We’re both looking forward to it.

“I’ve never actually been abroad, so this will be the first time.

“We’ll be helping to restore a school, ensure the locals have access to clean water, teach the kids English, geography and demonstrate good dental hygiene.”

Sarah added: “I’m really looking forward to this exper ience and making a positive impact on people’s lives.”

James and Sarah, both former pupils of Auchenharvie Academy, have a number of fundraisers planned before they leave for Fiji in July.

The next event is a coffee morning on April 13 at St Cuthber t’s Church in Saltcoats. Tickets are £1 for children and £3 for adult.

On May 24, the pair are holding clairvoyant night, featuring Sally Buxton, at Saltcoats Labour Club at 7. 30pm.
