A Saltcoats woman who lost her dad to cancer last year is undertaking an epic physical challenge in his memory.

Lorna Veal gave up her job at the Bank of Scotland to go out to Spain and care for her ailing dad, Glen Strachan, 73. Glen had emigrated to the country with Lorna’s step-mum Flora. Flora passed away from cancer in 2015, two years before Glen.

Lorna was shocked at the lack of care support in Spain and so wanted to raise money for Macmillan Cancer to help other carers. The mum of two will take on the Rob Roy Mighty Hike 26 Mile Challenge from Callendar to Killin in August.

She said: “I cared for dad alone in his dying months and I’m keen to raise as much as I possibly can for Macmillan to ease the burden of others caring alone for their loved ones.

"I have since settled in Saltcoats which has very quickly felt like home. Warm wonderful people all around Ayrshire have been very supportive from Kirkgate Church to my workplace in Kilmarnock.”
