THE town of Kilwinning was rocked at the weekend following the sad and sudden loss of one of its most well-known sons, David Scaife.

David was a larger than life figure known for his infectious smile, warmth, cracking sense of humour and wonderful singing voice.

Best known in the town and throughout North Ayrshire in both the bowling and cabaret scenes, David was an extremely loyal and hardworking man, and was always by the side of his beloved wife Janice.

Working as Secretary at both Kilwinning Bowling Club and the District Secretary within North Ayrshire for Bowls Scotland, David kept himself busy after retirement following a career working for Barr’s.

When he wasn’t bowling or travelling, he enjoyed nothing more than putting on a show at many pubs and clubs throughout the local area and always knew how to get the crowd going.

David was also an instrumental part in the formation of the North Ayrshire Bowling League which brought together three leagues from the county just three years ago. He proudly represented his club, Kilwinning on many occasions, most recently on Friday night in their win over Ardeer Rec before his untimely passing.

Tributes to David showed the love that was shown for him. Many clubs throughout North Ayrshire paid homage to the humble but proud man. These include Kilwinning Rangers, rival bowling clubs and the Ayrshire Bowling Association as well as Bowls Scotland, the governing body for the sport.

Bowls Scotland said in a statement: “Bowls Scotland are saddened this morning to hear of the sudden passing of District 27 Secretary David Scaife.

“David, the Secretary of Kilwinning Bowling Club, was a strong supporter of his local club, Ayrshire Bowling and many Bowls Scotland initiatives. David recently appeared in our promotional video for Try Bowls and was a great supporter of the sport in this country and at his beloved Kilwinning Bowling Club.

“Everyone at Bowls Scotland passes on their condolences to David’s family and friends at Kilwinning Bowling Club.”

David’s sister Aileen posted a tribute to ‘the best wee brother ever’ on Facebook, she said: “Heart Broken doesn't come close to the way Janice and I and the family are feeling at the loss of a wonderful husband, wonderful wee brother, wonderful uncle and wonderful friend to so many. A true gentleman, can't imagine my life without you David Scaife you've been the best wee brother ever. The family would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences.”
