Pupils across North Ayrshire took part in a fun golfing challenge this month.

This involved 204 kids from seven primary schools – St John’s, St Mark’s, Elderbank, Mayfield, Pennyburn, Glencairn, and Hayocks Primary.

The competition was run over two days by Irvine-based GolPhin – which hopes to introduce kids to golf within their schools, after school, and then eventually linking them to local clubs.

And on Thursday, March 13, St John’s Primary came out as the champions as pupils gathered at the Stevenston Golfing Centre.

Founder Calum McPherson said: “Our passion and commitment is to make golf exciting again for young kids ages three to 12, so we ultimately aim to get them started from as young as nursery and primary school. We are currently operating in around 23 countries now, helping kids realise their true potential both in sport and overall life-skill development. Having been brought up in North Ayrshire myself, I have a personal commitment to helping kids here in particular.”

Andrew McClelland, NAC Head of Education said: “GolPhin’s programmes are being received very well by our staff and the kids definitely enjoyed them. It’s refreshing to see so many local kids learning a new activity in school, leading them to after-school activities as well.”

John Butcher, former Director of Education at North Ayrshire Council said: “I’ve been helping the GolPhin4Kids Foundation to align their programmes to best practice education. Therefore, local kids are now being given the chance to shine both academically and in a new sport to them – golf.”
