A NEW memorial in honour of Ardrossan’s Corporal William Savage will be officially opened in September.

Following months of ups and downs for Cpl Savage’s family and uncertainty where the memorial would be going, North Ayrshire Council confirmed that there would be a permanent place at Stanley School where William, who died serving in Afghanistan, was a pupil.

And now a date has been set with William’s memorial to be dedicated on Monday, September 2 at 11am.

In March, the Herald revealed that the Stanley School site would be the home for William’s memorial with his mum Isobel speaking of her pride.

She said: “I am more pleased than ever before and it is still within the site of the old Stanley School.

“I am one happy mum. I am happy, relieved and proud all in one.”

A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Council said: “We have been very keen to ensure that Corporal William Savage is remembered in a fitting manner.

“In partnership with Mrs Savage, we have agreed September 2 as the date when we will host a short ceremony to commemorate the placing of a memorial stone for her son and hope it brings comfort and pride to William’s family and the wider community.”
