Three Towns Growers held a ‘bat walk’ at their allotments on Saturday night.
Frank Clarke, a bat expert, talked about the different types of bats that can be found in North Ayrshire and about the lives of bats in Scotland.
Participants were instructed in the use of bat detectors and headed for an area of woodland on the site to record and identify bats.
By 9.30pm the air was full of pipistrelle bats and attendees witnessed them flying fast and low overheard catching insects.
Everyone then went down to Stanley Burn in Elm Park where the faint ‘tick, tick, tick’ calls of whispering bats, probably the brown long-eared bat, were detected.
Three Towns Growers is a horticultural and green charity based at their Community Gardens & Allotments in Elm Park, Ardrossan.
The next wildlife event is a Butterfly Workshop on Saturday, August 10 from 1-3pm on site which is hosted by Suzanne Burgess of the charity Buglife.
