Members of the community enjoyed a small street party as the ‘Mona Lisa of Kilbirnie’ was officially unveiled in the town.

The mural, overlooking Craighouse Square, was commissioned by Adam McLean, who owns The Studio and Gallery. The striking artwork has been replicated from an oil painting by self-taught artist, Tom Donnelly.

Adam commissioned the mural after being amazed by Tom’s modern version of Leonardo da Vinci’s famous masterpiece.

The Studio and Gallery owner held a small party at the square on Saturday, August 3 to officially introduce the stunning work. And Tom’s original painting was on show inside the gallery as a special one-off exhibit.

Adam told the Herald: “It went very well, a nice little crowd of people turned out. It was quite a nice day, so I got a lot of chairs and tables out and put them in the square and had a little party with tea and biscuits. A good day was had by all.

“We had the original painting on show just for the day inside the gallery.

“It just helps to liven up a town which is not especially thriving.

“A lot of people don’t know that the Mona Lisa was not some renowned figure, she was a merchant’s wife in Florence – a merchant in Florence at that time was just a local person running a shop. Her husband commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to paint her and she became one of the most famous faces in the world.”
