A COUNCILLOR has blasted mindless vandals over the “graffiti epidemic” in Kilwinning.

Furious Councillor Donald Reid says there is a growing trend of yobs defacing public property and is calling on residents to take a stand and report any vandalism they see.

Cllr Reid says yobs are targeting local beauty spots, bridges and even children’s playparks leaving children devastated.

He said: “One wonders what satisfaction people get covering our public realm in graffiti.

“The current ongoing epidemic does nothing for our town or promotion of the area.

“As bridges, boxes, walls are being tagged on a regular basis.

“It appears a mass attempt to cover the Pavilion in McGavin Park is also someone’s desire.

“While the culprits at McGavin have left paint, rollers and bags with names, culprits are becoming careless.

“I have also been contacted as the play area in Pennyburn has been targeted leaving kids upset.”

Residents have also lashed out about the vandalism.

David Hoy said: “Pennyburn covered in sectarian vile and nothing gets done about it.”

Alan Caldwell added: “How anybody thinks this is acceptable behaviour is beyond me. Seems to be some sort of sectarian turf war. The graffiti in McGavin Park has already been re-done.”

“We use specialised equipment and chemicals that are environmentally friendly, safe and can be used to clean a range of surfaces and types of graffiti.

North Ayrshire Council will remove graffiti for free.
