Scotland’s Makar, Jackie Kay, inspired senior pupils at West Kilbride Primary School last week.

The Poet Laureate was in the village for a workshop at West Kilbride Library on Tuesday, October 29.

As part of the workshop, West Kilbride Primary invited Jackie to the school to give a talk to the P5-P7 pupils.

The poet read out some examples of her work and then discussed her poems with the children.

Lesley Shedden, depute head teacher at the school, said: “She read out about 10 of her poems then had a question and answer session with them.

“She was with them for about an hour, she had a great session, it was absolutely wonderful. The children thoroughly enjoyed it.

“She was talking about what inspired her to write some of her poems and the different types of imagery she uses.

“It was very, very worthwhile. It’s given the children a massive confidence boost, so it’ll be nice to see what kind of work they produce after it.”
