Plans for a new Kilbirnie primary school have been submitted for public consultation.

The former Garnock Academy site is set to become the home of the new Moorpark Primary School currently situated nearby.

North Ayrshire Council approved the site in January.

Neighbours have until Christmas Day to take part in the consultation.

Standards responses to the consultation must be lodged by Wednesday, December 18, 2019.

The planning application includes details of the associated access, parking, three playgrounds and sports pitch that are also planned to be built.

The campus will have 12 classrooms, a nursery and a seven-a-side all weather pitch.

The building will be predominantly naturally lit and ventilated, with three single storey wings off of a main two-storey hub.

The school is planned to be completed by 2021 and is funded by £9.6million of capitals funds set aside by North Ayrshire Council.

The listed advantages of the site were: location within the catchment, it is currently owned by the council, it has relative flatness or good ‘buildability’, it’s size, transport considerations, use of this site leaves a regular, separately accessible site for future development on the remainder of the Garnock Academy/Moorpark Primary School site and no statutory public consultation will be required.

Previously Councillor John Bell, cabinet member for education and youth employment, said: “The site on the playing fields ticks a lot of boxes.

“It’s close to the current school which is ideal for pupils and families, it’s on council-owned land and therefore readily available at no extra cost and is a good size.

“It is also, importantly, in a good condition for development.”
