Costs have doubled and delays increased for the new Ardrossan and Arran ferry.

The Scottish Government revealed that the Glen Sannox will not be ready until near the end of 2021.

Derek Mackay, Finance Secretary, said: "The the failures of management, planning and process means the vessels are behind their original programme and that significant rework is required."

Earlier this month, the Ferguson Marine shipyard, where the ferry was being manufactured, was taken into public ownership following it going into administration.

The yard was also producing a second vessel, the Hull 802, which now won't be ready til Summer 2022.

Around £83million of public money has been spent on the ships.

Jamie Greene, MSP for West of Scotland, said: “My constituents in North Ayrshire and Arran have been waiting for three years for a reliable ferry service, and have now been told that they will have to wait until the end of 2021 or possibly the start of 2022.

“Moreover, the SNP’s Transport Secretary has said that this will leave the taxpayer hundreds of millions of pounds out of pocket- this is on top of the £45 million the SNP loaned to shipbuilders before privatisation.

“It’s understandable why many are annoyed by today’s announcement. This is a lifeline service for many island residents who have continuously been let down by a SNP Government who offered nothing but delays and excuses.

“The SNP Government needs to reflect carefully on catalogue of errors which has resulted in today’s announcement."
