A building contractor will be extra vigilant following the discovery of a suspected military shell, says the council.
Yesterday, Tuesday, January 14, police swooped on the Morrison Construction site for the new North Ayrshire Additional Supports Needs School after reports of the unexploded shell.
Officers were called to the site, situated next to Auchenharvie Academy, around 3pm and the area was cordoned off to ensure there was no threat to public safety.
A North Ayrshire Council spokesperson said: “A suspected military shell was discovered on the site of the new ASN school at around 3pm on Tuesday, January 14. Works were stopped and Police Scotland were called immediately and took the appropriate measures to make the site and adjacent area safe.
“The shell was removed on Wednesday morning and we expect works to resume on the site on Thursday. Discoveries of this nature are not entirely unusual in a development of this scale and the contractor will progress with added vigilance as a result of this find.
“A full report on the device will be provided by Explosive Ordnance Disposal.”
