A UNIQUE opportunity to develop their skills in the Roaring Game was on offer to pupils from an Ayr primary school at the town’s ice rink earlier this month, writes Stewart McConnell.
Active Schools, in partnership with Ayr Curling Club offered the chance for pupils in P6 and P7 to participate in a two-hour curling taster session.
The session was part of the national Curling’s Cool programme and provided the pupils with an introduction to the sport and the club coaches provided instruction on a variety of drills to teach pupils the basics of the game.
They included:
* Safety awareness
* Delivery technique
* Team communication skills
* Tactics and basic shot signals
* Game rules.
Curling is a sport in which players slide stones on a sheet of ice toward a target area which is segmented into four concentric circles. It is related to bowls, boules and shuffleboard.
