Get your pooch down to Saltcoats Library for a free health check this Monday.

Welfare charity The Dogs Trust is running a Checkup and Chip Event next week.

This is a chance for your furry-friend to get a basic health check, nail clip, weight check and advice about dog ownership.

Microchipping and advice on how to update your details will also be available.

The basic health checks will cover eyes, ears, teeth & gums, coat and skin condition.

No appointment is required but the Dogs Trusts said: "We operate on a drop-in basis so be sure to come along with your dog and say hello, but please keep your dog on a lead when attending our Community Events.

All breeds of dogs are welcome at our Community Events, whether a pup or an adult, however Dogs Trust will not chip active hunting hounds or litters of puppies. We ask that puppies under 6 months old are fully vaccinated and proof of vaccinations are brought along to the event. If your puppy has recently been vaccinated, they must be carried for the 10 days following their final vaccination. Dogs over 6 months old do not require proof of vaccination.

All dogs over eight weeks old in Scotland must be registered under the Microchipping of Dogs (Scotland) Regulations 2016. This came into force on April 6, 2016.

Though the numbers have lessened since the legislation came into place, North Ayrshire Council's Dog Wardem Service said it still finds stray dogs that can’t be returned to their owners either due to out of date microchip details or no chip at all.

This results in the dog having to be taken to the kennels for the statutory period of seven days to allow the owner to come forward.

So, take advantage of the Dog Trust's offer while you can.

The event is on Monday, February 3, from 11am til 3pm at Saltcoats Library at Springvale Place.
