A FASCINATING insight into Chinese New Year was given to Heathfield Primary School and Early Years Centre, writes Stewart McConnell.
Pupils learned about cultures, foods and traditions during assemblies and learned the story in class. All children had the opportunity to taste traditional Chinese foods in the lunch hall and Primary 4 and Primary 7 pupils attended specialist Chinese Knotting workshops, learning the art of knotting.
Some classes made lanterns and puppets to act out the story. As part of Rights Respecting Schools pupils focused on Article 30. This makes it clear that children and young people who belong to a minority group have the right to share their culture, language and religion with other people. While most of what Article 30 says is implied by other articles of the UNCRC, it exists to make clear minority children should not be overlooked by people who think about how to put the convention into practice.
