A community council is disbanding after three years of representing local people.

Saltcoats Community Council (SCC) announced online that the group would cease to be active yesterday (Tuesday, February 18).

A spokesperson for the group told the Herald: "As a group of volunteers, we were all finding it difficult to commit the time required to keep it running.

"We put posts out on Facebook to try and get more members however we didn't get much response."

Since 2017, the community council has organised donations to good causes, raised funds with a personalised brick programme and held community bake off events.

They also represented the community on planning applications.

SCC carried out surveys that helped lead to the pedestrianisation of Dockhead Street.

They expressed their approval for the Sorbie Wind Farm development, in part because of funds that would be invested into the community if the project went ahead - the plans were rejected last week.

Community councillors expressed concern about the proposed retail shipping container application for Dockhead Street.

The announcement on SCC's Facebook page said: "We are sorry to announce that Saltcoats Community Council will no longer be an active voluntary group.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the community, businesses and local councillors for their support."

Councillor Ronnie McNicol, a regular attendee at the community council meetings, said: "They worked hard for the town, brought events to the town and tried to bring people into the town centre to try and regenerate it.

"Hopefully we'll have another community council."
