A WOMAN has called for council workers to fix her damp infested flat which she says is ‘embarrassing’.

Sophie Goudie, refuses to have her friends round due to the thick black mould that is covering her bathroom.

The 21-year-old moved into her first flat on Wilson Street in Lochside last April but soon began to notice the spread of damp, which she says makes her feel dizzy.

Sophie has been pleading with South Ayrshire Council to fix the problem which ‘scares’ her three-year-old niece when she comes to visit.

She told the Advertiser: “I noticed the damp when I moved in last year, I complained about it, but it just got worse and worse since August.

“The guy came out on January 11, and he said he would come back a week later to plaster it because it was that bad. That was seven weeks ago. They said they would phone me back, but they never phoned me back.”

“I’ve been phoning them every day since.”

“My towels are wet, my tissue paper all wet as well. My niece is scared to go in my bathroom because its all black and bubbly.

“It’s a really strong damp smell. It’s made me ill sometimes I feel dizzy when I’m in the bath. Its turned the soap black as well.”

Now she is worried the damp may spread to other parts of her house as she notices her kitchen window is starting to become affected.

Sophie is refusing to pay rent arrears owed to the council until they fix the problem.

She said: “It’s actually embarrassing to be honest. I don’t let any friends in my house because of it.

“I won’t be paying anything until they come and fix it. I just feel like the council just want money and they won’t actually help you.”

However, housing officers have claimed the reason for the delay on fixing the issue was caused by the tenant changing her number.

And they have confirmed that the work is now scheduled to be fixed by start of next month.

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire Council said: “We will always work with our tenants to ensure issues are dealt with as quickly as possible.

“In this case the tenant had changed their phone number which led to a delay in the survey taking place. There were then further delays as we tried to contact the tenant to arrange the start of works. These works are now scheduled to start at the beginning of March.”
