A FLOODED shower and mushrooms coming from the ceiling are stressing out a housing association resident.

Ian McDougall, who lives in a Cunninghame Housing Association flat on Glasgow Street in Ardrossan, said the leaking and damp problems have been going on for two months.

He told the Herald, a stream of water from the ceiling in his bathroom fills up the shower basin and causes it to overflow, ruining the flooring and making him slip and damage his hip.

The shower doesn’t have a regular drain, and instead the water must be removed with an electric pump which Mr McDougall must pay to operate.

He woke up on the morning of Sunday, February 23, and as he went into the toilet, he said he slipped on the floor.

He said: “I just had a hip replacement a year and half ago.

“I don’t expect my bathroom floor to be flooded.

“If I keep sliding, I’m going to pull my hip joint.

“I’m frustrated and they’re stressing me out. Nobody has made an effort and it’s their duty to fix the problem.”

There is also fully fledged fungus growing from the wall and ceiling near his front door.

He said: “Just outside the main door there are mushrooms growing.

“I’ve never seen anything like it.”

The 61-year-old is on disability benefit and said he first contacted his social landlord in December 2019, having had the flat for two years.

Frank Sweeney, group chief executive officer at Cunninghame Housing Association, said: “The problem with the water leak was initially thought to be coming from the upper flat but investigations proved this not to be the case.

“There was an issue gaining access to the upper floor property to determine the source of the water and the leak was intermittent which did not help in tracing where it was coming from.

“The association’s contractor has now removed boxing in at the upper landing and discovered a leak from the water feed pipe which was running across into Mr McDougall’s bathroom.

“The leak has now been repaired and reinstatement of the water damage has been instructed.”
