Ex-Auchenharvie Academy student Jamie Morgan is being celebrated this week alongside other inspiring new employees as part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week.

The event is coordinated by Skills Development Scotland and takes place March 2-6.

The theme is Talent without Limits, celebrating the diversity that makes Scottish Apprenticeships good for individuals, employers and the economy.

Jamie got a head start on his aeronautical engineering apprenticeship by completing a foundation apprenticeship in engineering at school alongside his other subjects.

This enabled Jamie to land his dream apprenticeship job when he left school. Part of Jamie’s foundation apprenticeship was with GE Caledonian, a world leading manufacturer of jet engines, components and integrated systems for commercial and military aircraft, who offered him an apprenticeship role upon graduating from Auchenharvie Academy.

Jamie said: “I have always wanted to work in engineering and have always wanted to work on jet engines. I liked the ‘head start’ aspect of the apprenticeship route because it meant I could learn the skills, get the work experience and get qualified.”

Jamie also likes the variety of his apprenticeship, especially working on the engines and being part of a team where he is learning from experienced colleagues.

He said: “I learn something new every day on my apprenticeship and the work is always interesting. I would say to anyone thinking about an apprenticeship to go for it and would say the best thing to do would be to do a Foundation Apprenticeship while they are at school. It would give them a great start.”

GE Caledonian’s Apprentice Instructor and Scotland’s Apprentice Instructor of the Year, Stephen McNab said: “When Jamie first came to us to do work experience and his Foundation Apprenticeship, we could see he had a positive outlook. He was keen to help and work with others which has led to him joining us as a Modern Apprentice.

“We have an ageing workforce at GE Caledonian, bringing Foundation and Modern Apprentices into the business means we can grow our own talent for the future.”
