A HUGELY anticipated end-of-war commemoration event planned for Girvan has been cancelled and put back by a year over conavirus fears.

Girvan and District War Project had been planning a VE Day 75 Picnic in the Park on May 8, the 75th anniversary of the Second World War ending in Europe.

However concerns over the virus forced them to pull the plug on the event.

The group said in a statement: “As I’m sure you’re all aware the current situation with the COVID-19 virus has reached a point where we will have to postpone our VE Day Picnic in the Park.

“This has been a gut-wrenching decision for us to make, but as event organisers, we have to put the health and well-being of our veterans, elderly and everyone else first and foremost.

“We have been following Government guidance and have been getting regular updates from various sources.

“With the over 70’s possibly having to self isolate for up to 12 weeks and this would include our veterans, those from cate homes and some of our helpers as they would be unable to attend.

Many of the youth groups will have been told not to. Let’s be clear this is a postponement and not a cancellation altogether. All the hard work, enthusiasm and by you all has touched our hearts.

“There was a date August 15 (Victory in Japan Day) which could be a potential replacement, but feel we could be in the same position then and feel that the date for our VE Day event should be moved to May 8, 2021.”
