NORTH Ayrshire's secondary schools will now only be open to children of critical key workers in the NHS and HSCP as the situation with Coronavirus escalates further.

The council had previously advised that S4, 5 and 6 pupils had to return to school tomorrow (Monday, March 23) to continue with coursework but that decision has now been reversed.

In a statment, NAC said: "You will appreciate this is a fast-developing situation. Our secondary schools are now closed for ALL pupils, including S4-S6, and staff tomorrow, Monday, March 23.

"No S4-S6 pupil should report to school tomorrow. We will review this approach on a regular and daily basis. We will ensure that no young person is disadvantaged by this decision which is made in good faith and to ensure we keep our communities safe.

"We will continue to plan to ensure all of our young people receive the qualifications they deserve. Schools will be in touch with their own S4-S6 pupils to give details about what work can be done remotely.

"Secondary school buildings will now only be open for emergency childcare for category 1 critical key workers in NHS/HSCP, and only if they have no other means of childcare."
