A photo of Arran’s peaks has earned one photographer international recognition in one of the worlds most prestigious photography competitions.

The celebrated snap, titled “Sleeping Warrior” was featured in the “Top 101 Photos” of The International Landscape Photographer of the Year award.

The image, taken by Grzegorz Piechowicz, originally of Poland, but who has resided in Scotland for the past 15 years, depicts the peaks of Arran’s mountain ranges as the sun illuminates one side of them and casts the other into shadow.

A typically moody sky threatens to enclose the sunshine, giving the light that does make its way onto the rocky landscape a celestial feel.

Piechowicz, an architect by trade, says he finds the lure of Arran’s mountains irresistible. The photograph was the product of one of his many trips to the island.

He said: “Last year I visited the Isle of Arran four times and every time I climbed different peaks.

“Notoriously unpredictable weather produced real moments of magic that transformed the landscape into something exceptional.

“I love spending my time exploring Arran’s mountains.

“The island has a distinct escapist atmosphere, and the mountains here are totally unique.”

The photo was selected to feature in the top 101 and beat off competition from over 3,500 others.
