Saltcoats Protestant Boys Flute Band have paid tribute to long-standing band member Gary Woods who sadly passed away on March 24 at the age of 49.

Gary was a founding member of the band, remaining loyal to the group for 15 years. He also played an active role in other flute bands in the area such as the Orange Order and Apprentice Boys of Derry.

In a statement posted on their Facebook page, the Saltcoats Flute Band said: “It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that our friend and fellow band member Gary Woods passed away.

“Gary’s wish was for the band to play at his funeral, but as the COVID-19 virus grips the country, this unfortunately will not be possible. We will however be arranging a parade as soon as practicable to commemorate the life of a true loyalist.”

Members went on to praise their late friend, saying he was “an inspiration to all for his commitment, dedication and knowledge of the band scene.”

Gary had been battling illness since November last year after he came home from working on the oil rigs and was rushed into hospital. The band along with friends and family organised a charity night to raise money for Gary in January, raising an admirable £3,500.

Frank McKee, Gary’s friend since they were five, and a fellow band member said: “I worked with Gary as his supervisor offshore on the oil rigs, on Beryl Bravo and Beryl Alfa. He was an active member of the team, a founding member, and the commitment he made to the band was second to none. He was well liked by everybody.

“My thoughts go out to his daughter and partner. After coronavirus we’ll try to organise a wee parade after the church service at the cemetery.”
