ICE aces from North Ayrshire have been forced to put their skates on the shelf owing to the coronavirus crisis.

North Ayrshire Ice Hockey Club have had to suspend all training and games due to the Covid-19 pandemic as have all other sports.

The EIHA & SIH suspended all competitive games on March 17.

This will initially last until May 31.

A further statement will be released on May 1 regarding competitive activities after May 31.

Club media officer Kirsty Massie said: “We at NAIHC are keeping our fingers crossed that our annual Sam Wallace Memorial Tournaments which are scheduled to take place over the first two weekends in June will be given the go ahead to continue, but at the moment - it’s a waiting game.”

Unfortunately the cancellation of games impacted on two teams who were denied their shot at glory in two major games.

Kirsty added: “Our Under 12’s - The Penguins and Under 20’s - The Devils were affected the most.

“Both these teams had made it into the Scottish Cup Finals that should have been held on March 21 where we were hopeful of them returning victorious.

“At this time we are unsure if these will be rescheduled.

“Our teams have all pulled together this season and have given us some impressive games, which sets them in good stead for the future.

“Although training has been suspended, all players have been encouraged to maintain their fitness and practice on their own, not only for their game but also to keep their mind healthy during these troubling times.

“Exercising will lift their mood and help them feel more alert and confident.

“We are hopeful that as a community we can all pull together to help stop the spread of the virus sooner rather than later and we will then all be back at the rink.”
