Lifesavers Scotland is looking to grow its vehicle fleet after expanding its service to Ayrshire and Arran amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The charity delivers emergency blood, medical supplies and PPE across Glasgow. It will now operate the service 24/7 across Ayrshire and Arran but requires more cars and bikes to carry out the vital work.

Martin Scott, Group

Director of Operations at The Fitzsimmons Group and Lifesavers volunteer, said: “Servicing Ayrshire and Arran has been on the cards for a while but with the pressure on the NHS right now, it’s the right time.

“We have doubled our fleet in Glasgow alone.

“What we’re primarily doing is working with pharmacies doing home drops for prescriptions and medication for cancer patients who can’t get to their GP for repeat prescriptions.

“We’re only in our first week but we need to increase our fleet to get more cars and motorbikes on the road.

“Our drivers are working during the night doing long commutes so we’re chasing our tail a bit.”

Lifesavers receives no funding from the NHS and is fully operated on a donation basis. To increase their fleet of cars and bikes, they are appealing for support from Ayrshire car dealers and local garages.

Support in the past has come from Ducati, Yamaha and MG & Triumph.

The charity is also appealing for more volunteers across the region.

Martin said: “In Ayrshire we’re looking for local car dealerships to loan cars short term, mainly ex demonstrator cars or new cars with business insurance would be helpful.

“We also need mini-bus drivers and are looking for another half a dozen volunteers for cars and motorbikes, if we are successful in expanding the vehicle fleet.”

More information as well as the volunteer application form can be found on their Facebook page.
