A BID to open a takeaway in a former bank building in Beith has been rejected.

Plans to change the use of the vacant bank on Eglinton Street to form a hot food takeaway with small seating area, lower ground floor residential flat and the erection of a flue to rear were submitted last month

However the plans were knocked back by planning chiefs over concerns of concentrating too many takeaways near the town centre, adding that the proposed basement flat resident would not enjoy an acceptable level of amenity’ from ‘sitting below a hot food takeaway’.

Beith and District Community Council objecting to the plan, with the chairperson writing: “It is felt that there are sufficient suppliers of takeaway services within the town.

“It is apparent that Beith is becoming a town of takeaway outlets particularly in Eglinton Street.

“From our observations of the the current takeaway food outlets in Beith, these draw more gatherings of youths to hang about in and we have little doubt that this proposal will only encourage further anti social behaviours to the residents of Eglinton Street who will feel intimidated."
