Concerns have been raised by Ardrossan residents about speeding drivers on the relatively empty streets of the locked-down town.

Residents have reported cars travelling beyond 70mph in 30mph zones, with Eglington Road in Ardrossan particularly mentioned.

Billy Hutchison, of Ardrossan, said: “In the last few weeks it feels like this stretch of road between Dalry Road and Witches Lynn has become a test track for speeding.

One day last week at 1pm, two cars were racing and I’m sure their speed was way beyond 70mph.

“There are residents who drive out or reverse out their drives and had this happened when these two idiots were speeding I would not like to think of the consequences.”

In response, Mark Patterson, chief inspector of Road Policing Division said: “Officers continue to maintain a high profile presence on our roads and deal with illegal driving behaviour, such as speeding, as appropriate and in order to keep people safe.

“Officers remain on patrol in local communities and will deal with incidents they come across. However we urge the public to consider if their journey is essential, and if it is, to drive safely to avoid putting more strain on emergency services.”
