A woman was rushed to hospital after being hit by a car on the A737 between Kilwinning and Dalry overnight.
The serious road crash happened around 2.35am today [Thursday, May 14], half a mile south of the junction with the Dalry bypass.
It involved a silver Ford Fiesta and a 34-year-old female pedestrian.
Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to Crosshouse Hospital with serious injuries.
The road was closed and diversions were in place until 7am while police carried out their investigations.
Road Policing Sergeant Ian Thornton said: "Our enquiries into the crash are ongoing and it's important we establish exactly what happened. I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the pedestrian prior to the crash but has not yet spoken to police to come forward. I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have dash cam footage which could help with our investigation."
Anyone with information should contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting reference number 0292 of 14 May.
