Sick scammers are attempting to prey on pensioners by trying to pry out bank details while pretending to check how the residents are doing while alone under lockdown.

A rise in incidents of fraudsters trying to get personal information on the phone has been reported, linked to the COVID-19 crisis – with East Ayrshire Council reminding all residents that they would never ask for bank details.

A spokesperson said: “We have been made aware that some East Ayrshire residents have been asked for personal details during phone calls to check on how they are doing.

“Our call handlers will not ask for any personal details like bank information or NI numbers.

“We have been alerted to an increase in the variety of scams, including many related to coronavirus. Please stay vigilant.”
