Calls have been made for speed restrictions to be brought in after a crash could have been ‘a whole load worse’.

Residents of Moffat Wynd, off Burns Avenue in Saltcoats, were woken by a bang on May 20, after a car came off the road shortly before midnight.

Mrs Wylie, 44, said: “I got quite a fright. I was really surprised the driver walked away.”

The car, which was being driven by a 51-year-old man, had destroyed two garden fences, downed a telecom mast and taken a gouge out from the pavement before ending up on its roof.

Mrs Wylie said: “We need to take this as a warning. People could have lost lives.

“It was lucky it happened at night. Imagine if it had happened during the day. There’s more people walking than driving under lockdown.”

The driver was taken to Crosshouse Hospital for further treatment.

Councillor Jim Montgomerie wants to push for traffic calming measures to be implemented on Burns Avenue to reduce the speed at which vehicles come down the road.

He said: “Something needs done before somebody gets killed.

“There were bollards up at the corners along Burns Avenue. They’ve come down after being hit by cars.

“Speed cameras and things aren’t going to work. There needs to be restrictions. It’s got to be dealt with.”

Cllr Montgomerie said he witnessed drivers going at speeds of up to 50mph on the 30mph stretch.

He wants any resident who is in favour or against restrictions, namely speed bumps, to get in touch with him.

He will then take the proposals to the council.
