Several people had to be rescued from a blazing building in the middle of the night in Stevenston.

Five people were treated for injuries at the scene before being taken to Crosshouse Hospital after a fire in a flat in Hayocks Road just after 1am this morning. 

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were called around 1.10am on Monday, August 3, to a report of a fire at flats in Haycocks Road, Stevenston.

"We assisted colleagues in the Fire and Rescue Service with the evacuation of a number of residents. The road was closed and reopened around 8.20am this morning."

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 1.04am on Monday, August 3 to reports of a house fire in Stevenston.

“Operations Control mobilised crews to the scene at the town's Hayocks Road, where firefighters extinguished the fire.

"Five casualties were treated at the scene by paramedics before being transported to Crosshouse Hospital.

"Firefighters worked to ensure the area was made safe and one fire appliance currently remains in attendance."
