A simple act of kindness by a server at a Glasgow bar has gone viral.

A customer praised the actions of a staff member at the 13th Note on King Street on Reddit, inviting social media users to support the business.

Explaining that he had been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic, he had gone to the city to look for work and pawn his guitar to make ends meet.

He went into the Merchant City bar and ordered a soft drink, but his card was declined upon payment.

But the server encouraged the man to take the drink and also brought over some food.

The Reddit post explains: "I was really taken aback by the generosity of the server, and she told me, 'It's alright, I've been where you are, and with the COVID going on, I get it. Really, It's fine; Wire in'.

"But for the next 20 mins, I sat there eating, the whole time while I was fighting the urge to cry.

"These people could have very easily turned round and told me to piss off, and they'd have been in their rights to do so.

"Instead, they gave me one less meal (plus juice) to scrape for, out of pure kindness and nothing else."

He explained that the simple act of generosity was "perhaps the most poignant and emotional experience I've ever had from a total stranger".

"These are good, decent people who are struggling to keep a small business afloat and they still did me a solid that I didn't expect nor ask for.

"If anyone in hospitality deserves to stay open and thrive as a business, it's them."

Many were touched by the generosity and support for the business poured in on the post.

Even the server stumbled across the post and invited the man to "pop in" again.

She explained that the kindness of strangers was crucial to her settling into the city.

She wrote: "I am really glad I managed to brighten up your day!

I am sorry I didn't realise you were feeling a bit emotional- I assumed you were a skint musician and looked a bit down so I had to step up.

I arrived to Scotland with 300 pounds on my pocket and I don't like to talk about this now (it's been 6 years) but it was pretty damn hard.

"Starving levels of hard, crying in a stolen duvet levels of hard. But I made it.

"Everything I own now, everything I am now - happened cause strangers kept reaching out.

"I will never stop feeling grateful to the people of this city for adopting a mutt like me - and the only way I can show it is by passing on this borrowed kindness and hope for the best."
