A newly-wed Dalry man who had a heart transplant in secret has died just weeks after his hospital wedding.

Steven Cairns married sweetheart Katie Morris in a small ceremony at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital while confined to his bed after staff stepped in to make their dream a reality.

Earlier this month, he also had a heart transplant in secret as he didn't want to worry his wife following three previous failed attempts.

He sadly died last night [August 20], the day before he was to be allowed home after spending months in hospital waiting for his new heart.

He was put on a ventilator in intensive care after taking a seizure and going into cardiac arrest.

His devastated wife Katie paid tribute to him and the happiness he brought her after their chance meeting.

Katie wrote: "And so my journey has ended in the most tragic way - my beloved Steviebhoy gained his angel wings and went to that paradise in the sky.

"Today he was supposed to be coming home and we were finally going to start our married life together - we had so many plans for the future and were looking forward to planning to renew our wedding vows and having a party to share our love with our family and friends. Instead of planning our wedding I need to start planning his funeral.

"My heart is absolutely breaking today.

"Stevie was one of the most kindest people I know and the way he has fought over his illness over the last 7 months was exceptional. I am so proud that I am his wife - even if only for a short few months.

"Steviebhoy you are a legend but most importantly you are my legend. I don’t know what the future holds for me but every moment of every day I will be looking out for signs that you are watching over me.

"Love you always and forever - forever in my heart."
