Plans to build a new primary school in Kilbirnie have now been approved.

The former Garnock Academy site is set to become the home of the new Moorpark Primary School, currently situated nearby.

The application for the new school building, access, parking, playground and sports pitch at at Milton Road was approved last week.

The campus will have 12 classrooms, a nursery and all weather pitch. The building will be mostly naturally lit and ventilated, with three single storey wings off of a main two-storey hub.

Planning documents state: “A new, adaptable and flexible school building for Moorpark Primary would be of significant benefit to the area and emphasize the importance of educational expectations and improving attainment for the local community.

Cllr John Bell, cabinet member for education and youth employment, said: “The site on the playing fields ticks a lot of boxes.

“It’s close to the current school which is ideal for pupils and families, it’s on council-owned land and therefore readily available at no extra cost and is a good size. It is also, importantly, in a good condition for development.”
