A FIVE-YEAR limit for retail shipping containers in Saltcoats is set to remain – despite concern from the operator they will struggle to attract traders.

Plans to site five modified shipping containers for retail and hot food units in the town’s Dockhead Street were submitted to planning chiefs earlier in the month.

The plans include the erection of a glazed overhead canopy, with examples of the idea being used down in London included in the plans.

A condition review request to remove a five year limit was considered at last week’s Local Review Body.

The operator said: “We are investing £150,000 on the entire project, which will provide an opportunity to attract more trade to the

town.

“The current five year term would not attract business as this does not allow for any long term stability.

“This project is the only viable option for Landsborough Trinity Church to become of some use. This will only result in another empty building within the town centre.”

During the meeting Saltcoats Independent Cllr Ronnie McNicol moved to keep the limit.

He said: “Its a raised area in front of the church. Personally I wouldn’t welcome it in the town centre but planning permission has been passed so I have to accept it.”

Kilwinning Labour Cllr Donald Reid said: “We have a standard practice of temporary buildings being five years so we have to stick with that. I think it is important we keep it.”

The application was approved earlier in the year despite concern from community councillors expressing concern over the new retail concept.

A letter from the group cited empty units in the high street and fears they could “detrimentally change the character of our town”.
