A school has appealed for parents to ensure their children wear face-coverings to school after giving out 150 disposable masks in a single day.

Representatives for the South Lanarkshire High School, St John Ogilvie High School, stated it was "unsustainable" to hand out that number of masks in a day.

A limited supply of disposable masks has been made available at the school for instances where pupils forget to take a face covering with them.

According to guidance by the Scottish Government, face coverings should be worn by all adults and pupils in secondary schools in areas where physical distancing is difficult, including corridors and communal areas.

Appealing to parents on Twitter a statement from the school read: "Face Masks - whilst we are happy to give out masks to those that do not have one, we gave out 150 masks today alone.

"This is unsustainable. Please ensure that, where possible, your child has a face mask for school. Thank you for continuing to support us."

However, parents and carers should treat face coverings as part of the essential school kit for pupils, the local authority instructed.

A spokesman for South Lanarkshire Council said: “Schools understand that sometimes a pupil will neglect to bring a face covering with them, and that is why arrangements have been made for a limited supply of disposable masks to be available when these are required.

“However, pupils are expected to have their own face coverings and bring them to school. As well as wearing them when moving around school, many will need them for the journey to and from school or if they will be in locations such as shops during the day.

"For the moment at least, pupils and their parents or carers should view a face covering as part of their basic and essential kit for school and should always have them with them during the school day.”
