Firefighters were called to a blaze in a derelict building in Saltcoats this week.

Three appliances blue-lighted to the property where Countess Street and Quay Street meet on Wednesday night.

An investigation is ongoing with police believing the fire was set deliberately.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted to reports of a fire within a derelict building on Countess Street, Saltcoats at 9.32pm on Wednesday, October 7.

“Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the scene where firefighters extinguished the fire.

“Crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We were made aware of a fire within a building on Quay Street, Saltcoats, around 9.35pm on Wednesday, October 7.

"Nobody was injured and the fire is being treated as wilful. Anyone with any information about the incident should contact us on 101 quoting incident number 3546 of 7 October 2020 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

The area was closed off while officers investigated.
