A Three Towns primary school has asked three classes to stay at home and isolate until further notice after multiple confirmed cases of coronavirus.

Dykesmains Primary in Saltcoats notified parents and carers with a letter on Saturday morning telling them not to come into school on Monday, November 9.

The letter, seen by the Herald, states that all pupils in the affected classes should stay home 'until further notice'.

It reads: "Some other close contacts may also be asked to isolate but they will be directly contacted by ourselves."

NHS Ayrshire and Arran said that a 'small number' of people are being asked to self-isolate after contact with two positive cases, but the school has instructed all children from three different classes spanning three individual year groups not to come into school.

Children will have their teaching moved online via the GLOW app.

Lynne McNiven, Joint Director of Public Health, said: "NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Test & Protect team is conducting contact tracing within Dykesmains Primary school in the North Ayrshire Council area.

"A small number of individuals are being contacted by the Test and Protect team and told to self-isolate at home for 14 days following contact with two positive cases.

"We appreciate this is a very worrying time. However, we would like to assure people that every measure is being taken to protect pupils and staff.

"To respect and maintain patient confidentiality it is not possible to release any further information at this time.

"We would like to remind people of the symptoms of Coronavirus (COVID-19): new persistent cough; high temperature; and / or loss of taste and smell. Anyone who develops any of these symptoms should book a test and self-isolate immediately."
