A FORMER homeless shelter in Saltcoats looks set to be demolished to make way for new homes for elderly residents

An application for the demolition of the supported accommodation unit and housing association flats 25 Green Street And 13-15 Vernon Street was validated last month.

The plans would see the former shelter replaced with a new flatted block with 24 amenity/elderly residential flats, with a mix of one and two bedroom properties

We previously reported the former Quarrier’s and Simon Community hostel closed its doors last year with plans being worked on between owners Cunninghame Housing Association and North Ayrshire Council.

Planning documents state: “MAST Architects have been commissioned by Cunninghame Housing Association to develop proposals for a new build flatted development at the corner of Green Street and Vernon Street in Saltcoats.

“The proposed housing mix reflects Cunninghame Housing Association’s desire to provide flats for elderly and amenity tenants in a central and accessible location.

Contained within a single flatted block the development will provide a mix of one and two bedroom flats, including wheelchair accessible accommodation, all to Housing for Varying Needs standard.

“Prior to the commencement of works on site, the existing building will be demolished. Consideration was given to the re-use of the existing building however the option to rebuild is seen as a means of achieving greater density on the site and realising an enhanced architectural quality and sustainable performance that will benefit the site

“As part of the demolition works, any asbestos will be removed.”
