Stevenston’s post office building could be set to be demolished in plans for two new shops with flats.

Plans would see two new retail units with six flats constructed to the rear of the current building with the Stevenston post office boss confirming the current building will not be demolished until the new shop is in use.

An application – which would see the area where the building now sits used for car parking spaces – was submitted late last month to North Ayrshire Council’s planning chiefs and validated this week [Monday, October 26].

Post office boss Robin Bawa told the Ardrossan and Saltcoats Herald that he had spoke to some potential investors already and that it was crucial that Stevenston still had a post office throughout the proposed works

He said: “It is very early days but we are wanting to invest the the town. We are in talks with a few investors but things are at an early stage.

“It is key for us that the town has a Post Office with parking and the current Post Office will not be demolished until the new shop is built.”

The application states the proposed new floorspace would be for Class 1 retail and/or food and that the applicant and architect ha been in constant dialogue with the planning authority in trying to achieve the standards fed back to them.

There will be an area at the side and rear of the building to store the refuse bins which will be brought to the front of the building on collection day.
