Everyone enjoys spotting a familiar face on the big screen, and over the years some of Ayrshire’s finest exports have graced our televisions in a variety of productions.

Here are some of the best TV shows and movies you can catch some homegrown talent in:

Lilly Aspell

At just 13-years-old, Springside school pupil Lilly Aspell has already built up an impressive CV.

Her first major role came back in 2017 when she was cast as the younger version of Gal Gadot’s Diana.

Lilly reprised the role for the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, which was released at the tail end of 2020. With most cinemas closed, the movie is already available to purchase on platforms such as Amazon Prime Video and Google Play.

The teenager has also appeared in Will Ferrell and John C Reilly’s comedy Holmes & Watson, as well as sci-fi flick Extinction – both available on Netflix.

She will be taking to our screens again in the near future, playing the younger version of Lily James’ character in the BBC’s newest period drama, The Pursuit of Love.

Julie Graham

Irvine’s Julie Graham has appeared in a number of popular shows over the years.

She is currently a member of the main cast of crime drama Shetland, portraying the hard-line procurator fiscal, Rhona Kelly.

Graham has appeared in favourites such as Doctor Who and Doc Martin, as well as a two year stint as Sheron Dawson on ITV’s Benidorm.

She also plays Moira Douglas in four-episode thriller One of Us, available on Netflix.

John Sessions

Originally from Largs, John Sessions was a comedian and actor known for his appearances on Whose Line Is It Anyway? and a host of TV and movie productions.

The performer passed away in November last year.

He featured alongside some of Hollywood’s finest, with credits in films such as the Gangs of New York, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis, and Al Pacino’s The Merchant of Venice.

In more recent years, the actor appeared in the Kray twins crime thriller Legend, as well as the Florence Foster Jenkins biopic starring Meryl Streep.

Ronni Ancona

Actress and impressionist Ronni Ancona was brought up in Troon and first came to prominence on comedy sketch show The Big Impression.

She is also known for her role as Judith in the BBC comedy-drama Last Tango in Halifax.

Her other roles include Wanda in fantasy rom-com Penelope, Jenna Fitch in Channel 4’s Skins and Mrs Fletcher in Still Game.

She recently appeared on the Christmas Special of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Grado

Graeme Stevely, better known as Grado, is a professional wrestler and actor from Stevenston.

He stars as PC Hugh McKirdy in BBC spoof comedy Scot Squad, which is available on the iPlayer.

He also appears alongside a host of Scottish comedy talent in Two Doors Down. The wrestler portrays the Baird’s new neighbour Alan from season three onwards.
