Hunterston could be set to become a green port, after proposals were unveiled for a new model of ports focused on inclusive growth, fair work practices and delivering a net zero waste economy.

The Scottish Government is developing plans to establish fair, sustainable, green ports offering streamlined planning processes and a package of tax and customs reliefs.

Under the proposals, green port operators would have to pay the real living wage, adopt the Scottish Business Pledge of fair work practices, equality, opportunity and innovation and commit to supporting sustainable and inclusive growth in local communities.

Cunninghame North MSP Kenneth Gibson backs Hunterston as a green port location and said: “The Scottish green port model will be an exemplar and I’m keen that we benefit from these proposals here in North Ayrshire.”

During a recent Scottish Parliament debate, he asked Trade Minister Ivan McKee: “Will Hunterston be considered as a potential green port, given the First Minister’s commitment to developing green energy and the circular economy there?”

Mr McKee replied: “Hunterston can submit an application when we open the bidding process. I look forward to seeing any proposal that might come from Hunterston.”

In response, Mr Gibson added: “I was heartened by the Minister’s open-minded approach and encouragement of an application from Hunterston which, if successful, will see major investment and new, high-value, well-paid jobs in North Ayrshire and I will certainly do whatever I can to help such a bid succeed.”
